As with other leptons, the muon is not thought to be composed of any simpler particles; that is, it is a&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fundamental particle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fundamental_particle\">fundamental particle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The muon is an unstable&nbsp;<a title=\"Subatomic particle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subatomic_particle\">subatomic particle<\/a>&nbsp;with a&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mean lifetime\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mean_lifetime\">mean lifetime<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<span class=\"nowrap\">2.2&nbsp;<a title=\"Microsecond\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microsecond\">&mu;s<\/a><\/span>, much longer than many other subatomic particles. As with the decay of the non-elementary&nbsp;<a title=\"Neutron\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neutron\">neutron<\/a>&nbsp;(with a lifetime around 15 minutes), muon decay is slow (by subatomic standards) because the decay is mediated only by the&nbsp;<a title=\"Weak interaction\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weak_interaction\">weak interaction<\/a>&nbsp;(rather than the more powerful&nbsp;<a title=\"Strong interaction\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strong_interaction\">strong interaction<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Electromagnetic interaction\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electromagnetic_interaction\">electromagnetic interaction<\/a>), and because the mass difference between the muon and the set of its decay products is small, providing few kinetic&nbsp;<a title=\"Degrees of freedom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Degrees_of_freedom\">degrees of freedom<\/a>&nbsp;for decay.
